I'd like to share with you guys my podcast that's speaks all things dog sledding in Australia. Our guest are mushers from around the country and they share there stories, passions and their current goals for the sport. We're not a fortunate as majority of you guys were sledding may be 80% or more achieved in snow. We are only luckily enough to have about 3 - 4 weeks opportunity to actually race in the snow and the other 80% of our race calender involves dryland mushing with scooters and carts.

We were privileged enough to have Iditarod veteran Ben Good sit down with us for over an hour. Ben was the only 2024 rookie who had completed the thousand mile Yukon Quest. He talks about the differences of those two expeditions and did a start to finish recap of his first trip to Nome. Good Alaska Mushing is based out of North Pole, Alaska - enjoy!

They’re skinny and don’t look particularly strong at a glance. They’re lithe and wiry. And they all look different; their ears, coat colors, and tails all vary. A lot of them have icy blue eyes. We’re talking about the Alaskan husky. No kennel club recognizes them as an official breed, but this is because they are, at this point in history, essentially a performance mutt with many varieties of dogs mixed in. But their base genetics are ancient and trace back to Alaska thousands of years.

Consider how long humans have been using dogs to pull themselves and their gear and supplies by sled — for at least hundreds of years, maybe longer. The Alaskan husky is the premier version of a sled dog, combining the best elements of Native huskies with that of Siberian huskies, Alaskan malamutes, Chukotka sled dogs, Canadian Eskimo dogs, and Greenland dogs. And more. When European traders and settlers showed up here, they immediately threw some Pointers, Greyhounds, Labs, and Setters into the genetic mix. Today, no dog rivals the Alaskan husky in feats of endurance.

As for our interview, Brendan and Sean get back on track with a guest on the show. Sean Williams is from Chugiak, AK - a small community between Anchorage and the Mat-Su valley. Sean participated in 2 of the last 3 Iditarods and is a multi-time finisher of the Copper Basin 300 and other mid distance races in Alaska, some of which aren't around anymore. He also created a new website for the mushing community called sleddogtalk.com. This episode might be a two (or more) parter folks, enjoy!

In this episode we had the honor of talking with the first and only 6-time Iditarod champion. Listen as he talks with us about the challenges he faced this season and how he overcame them. He shares some advice for young mushers. Dallas also gives us insight into his future in his career in mushing.
