Tracing the former 93-mile Lamoille Valley Railroad (LVRR) line from St. Johnsbury to Swanton, it links 18 towns across five counties, including St. Johnsbury, Danville, Cabot, Walden, Stannard, Greensboro, Hardwick, Wolcott, Morristown, Hyde Park, Johnson, Cambridge, Fletcher, Bakersfield, Fairfield, Sheldon, Highgate, and Swanton. The LVRT plays a crucial role in connecting various recreational trails in Vermont and Canada, facilitating access to the VAST snowmobile trail network, the Long Trail, the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail, the Three Rivers Path, and the Cambridge Greenway.

Featuring a 10-foot-wide surface of firm compacted crushed stone with 2-foot grass shoulders and wheelchair-accessible grades, the trail accommodates non-motorized activities year-round. In warmer months, it invites walkers, joggers, hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders. During winter, local snowmobile clubs meticulously maintain and groom the trail, enabling snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding. Along the way, designated fish and wildlife waysides offer additional recreational opportunities, while ample trail parking is available throughout the corridor. Beyond recreation, the LVRT showcases significant historical landmarks, including the Fisher Covered Bridge, bridges in Morristown and Swanton, historic railroad station buildings, stone culverts, and a railway workers’ memorial, providing a rich immersion in Vermont’s natural and historical heritage.
